The most important quality decision a CBD brand makes happens before any bottle is filled: where the hemp comes from. Customers can taste the difference between brands that source carefully and brands that source on price alone — even if they can't articulate exactly what they're tasting.

Why Sourcing Matters

Hemp is what's called a bioaccumulator plant. It pulls things out of the soil — nutrients, minerals, and unfortunately also pesticides and heavy metals if they're present. The quality of the soil where hemp grew shows up in the final extract. There's no way to "clean it up" downstream.

What this means in practice:

• Soil quality at the farm = quality of the cannabinoid extract
• Pesticide use = residues in the extract
• Heavy metal contamination = same
• Lab testing catches what shouldn't be there, but the goal is to avoid it upstream

Our Vetting Process

For each agricultural sourcing partner:

1. Farm verification. We confirm the farm is licensed under the relevant state's hemp program (each state with legal hemp has a permitting system).

2. Practices review. We confirm growing practices align with our quality standards — no problematic pesticides, sustainable cultivation methods.

3. Sample testing. Before any sourcing decision, we test samples through independent labs.

4. Per-batch COA review. Every batch from every sourcing partner comes with a Certificate of Analysis. We review every COA before accepting the batch.

5. Ongoing relationship. The best sourcing partners are long-term. They know what we expect, we know how they work, and quality is consistent batch to batch.

What's on a COA

The Certificate of Analysis is the single most important document in CBD quality control. Here's what to look at on any COA (whether ours or anyone else's):

• Cannabinoid profile. Confirms the CBD content matches the label. For full-spectrum products, also confirms CBG, CBN, and trace THC levels.
• Pesticide screen. Confirms absence (or trace levels within legal thresholds) of common pesticides.
• Heavy metal screen. Confirms absence of arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury.
• Microbial screen. Confirms absence of harmful bacteria, yeast, and mold.
• Residual solvents (for extracts). Confirms post-extraction solvents are below safe thresholds.

The Final Quality Step: Internal Testing

Even after sourcing partners' COAs, every Urban Roots batch goes to an independent lab for testing once we've blended it into final product form. This catches anything that could happen during our own mixing or bottling.

Why We Don't Always Source Locally

One question we get: "Why doesn't Urban Roots use only Michigan-grown hemp?"

The honest answer: hemp grows where it grows best, and the best agricultural conditions for hemp aren't always in Michigan in any given year. We source from agricultural partners we trust across the U.S. (we don't import). Our craft, formulation, testing, and bottling are all Michigan-based — that's where the brand identity comes from.

What this means for you: you get the best raw material plus the consistency of small-batch Michigan production. Both matter.

How to Audit a CBD Brand's Sourcing

Do you use organic hemp?
We work with sourcing partners whose practices align with organic standards even when not formally certified. Certification adds cost without changing practice; we focus on the practice.

Why is my CBD slightly different in color from the last bottle?
Natural product variation. Hemp extract from different harvests can vary slightly in color and viscosity even when cannabinoid content is identical. The COA is what matters.

Are imported hemp products safe?
We don't source imported hemp. U.S.-sourced hemp lets us verify growing practices and ensures the product is fully regulated under U.S. law.
