CBD Freeze Cream: When Cold Therapy Meets Hemp

You know that first second after you apply something cold to a tired muscle? That instant clarity, that feeling of "okay — that helps." We built our Urban Roots Freeze Cream around that moment, and then added hemp-derived CBD on top.

The Freeze Cream is one of our most-loved products and a Cannabis Cup award winner (3rd Place Best Topical, 2019). This post breaks down what's actually in it, how the cooling sensation works, and when topicals fit into your routine.

What's in the Jar

The two main characters:

  • Cooling agents — natural menthol-family ingredients that produce a fast cooling sensation on contact with skin. The cool feeling activates within seconds and persists for several minutes.
  • Hemp-derived CBD — premium hemp extract suspended in a non-greasy cream base. The CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors in your skin, working locally where you apply it.

The base is alcohol-free, non-greasy, and absorbs quickly without leaving residue. 4 oz jar, 500 mg total CBD per jar.

How Topicals Differ from Tinctures

This is the key thing to understand if you're new to CBD. Tinctures, capsules, and edibles deliver CBD systemically — it enters your bloodstream and circulates. Topicals deliver CBD locally — it works in the skin and tissue directly underneath where you apply it. Topicals don't enter your bloodstream meaningfully.

What that means in practice:

  • Topicals are great for targeted areas — apply where you want it
  • Topicals won't show on a drug test regardless of THC content (no bloodstream entry)
  • Topicals can be combined with tinctures or capsules — they don't double up

When Pet Parents... I Mean, When People Reach for Freeze Cream

The patterns we see:

  • Post-workout. After a long ride, a hard run, or a heavy lifting session — applied to whichever muscle group did the most work.
  • End of day. Standing all day, a long drive, a heavy day at work. Applied to neck, shoulders, lower back.
  • Active travelers. Hikers, skiers, weekend warriors — Freeze Cream is a permanent member of the duffel bag.
  • Daily routine. Some people use it as part of their post-shower ritual, especially in winter when joints feel tight.

How to Apply

  1. Wash and dry the area
  2. Scoop a small amount — pea-to-quarter sized depending on coverage area
  3. Massage in until the cream disappears
  4. Wait 30 seconds — you'll feel the cooling sensation
  5. Reapply 2–4 hours later if needed

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't apply to broken skin, fresh cuts, or rashes
  • Wash hands thoroughly afterward — menthol-family compounds are intense if they get in eyes
  • Avoid mucous membranes
  • Patch-test first if you have very sensitive skin

The Award Story

The High Times Cannabis Cup is the longest-running cannabis competition in the U.S. — judges include industry veterans, dispensary owners, and product specialists. In 2019, our Freeze Cream took 3rd Place in the Best CBD Topical category.

What that means in practice: a panel of people who use a lot of CBD topicals professionally evaluated ours alongside dozens of others and put it in their top 3. We didn't pay for the placement; the product won on its own merits.

Freeze Cream vs Other Topicals in the Lineup

We make several topical formats. The differences:

  • Freeze Cream — cooling sensation, target post-activity or end-of-day. Most-pulled topical in the lineup.
  • Body Butter — daily skincare ritual, no cooling sensation, focused on skin condition
  • CBD Roll-On — portable applicator, good for purse/gym bag
  • Lip Balm — targeted at lips specifically
  • Bath Bombs — soak-format for full-body relaxation

FAQ

How long does the cooling sensation last?
Typically 5–15 minutes of intense cooling, fading to mild sensation over the next 30–60 minutes.

How often can I reapply?
Every 2–4 hours as needed. Most people use it 1–2 times per day on relevant areas.

Will it show up on a drug test?
No. Topicals don't enter your bloodstream meaningfully, so trace THC content (under 0.3%) won't affect drug screens. See our FAQ page for more.

Can I use it daily?
Yes. Many customers do. As long as your skin tolerates the menthol cooling agents, daily use is fine.

Is the smell strong?
Mild cooling/menthol scent on application that fades within 10–15 minutes. Not perfumey.

Bottom Line

Freeze Cream is a Cannabis Cup-winning topical that pairs an immediate cooling sensation with hemp-derived CBD. It's not magic — it's a quality product that does its job and doesn't pretend otherwise. Apply where you need it, wait 30 seconds, and feel the cool work.
